Fly extermination on the North Shore

At a glance: Flies proliferate wherever they find food, moisture, or decaying matter. Depending on the species — houseflies, fruit flies (gnats), drain flies or so-called “pollinator” flies that invade the fall — the source differs. Since they can contaminate food, it is necessary to act quickly: eliminate the egg-laying sites, seal the accesses and, in the event of a persistent invasion, call in an exterminator.

Lots of flies = a source to find

A sudden invasion almost always hides a breeding focus (garbage, drain, ripe fruit, organic matter). To abolish it is to solve the problem.

Flies in brief

Type Flying insect (fly, gnat, drain fly)
Where it is found Kitchen, garbage cans, drains, ripe fruit, attic (cluster)
Distinguishing Feature Sudden presence in numbers
Main risk Food and surface contamination
Recommended Solution : Eliminate the source of spawning and seal access

The most common types of flies

  • House fly : attracted to waste, food and animal feces.
  • Fruit flies (gnats): small, around ripe fruit, compost and empty bottles.
  • Drain flies : are born in the organic matter of water drains and siphons.
  • “Pollinator” flies (cluster flies ): enter in large numbers in the fall to overwinter in walls and attics, then reappear in spring.

Why flies are invading

All of them are looking for a place to lay eggs and a source of food: unsealed garbage cans, dirty dishes, overripe fruit, dirty drains, decomposing organic matter, or simply a window without a mosquito net. A few flies quickly become dozens, because their reproductive cycle is short.

How to Get Rid of Flies

  • Eliminate the sources : closed bins and regularly taken out, dishes done, fruit put away, compost well managed.
  • Clean drains (boiling water, brush) to eliminate drain fly outbreaks.
  • Seal the accesses : screens in good condition, weather stripping, caulked cracks (see our caulking service).
  • For fall invasions (cluster flies), the entry points of the attic and walls must be treated and sealed.

When to call an exterminator

If the flies keep coming back despite cleaning, it is because a hidden home persists (drain, wall, attic). An exterminator locates it and treats it at the source, and secures access. For other insects, see our insect extermination page.

Prevent flies

Keep the kitchen clean and dry, close garbage cans, maintain drains, and check screens and caulking before summer and fall.

FAQ — Flies

Are flies dangerous?
They do not usually bite, but can contaminate food and surfaces by carrying bacteria. It is better to limit their presence in the kitchen.
Where do gnats (fruit flies) come from?
Ripe fruit, compost, empty bottles and cans, or drains. Removing these sources quickly reduces their number.
How do you get rid of drain flies?
By cleaning the drains and siphons (boiling water, brush) to destroy the organic matter where they lay eggs.
Why do I have so many flies at once in the fall?
They are often “cluster flies” who seek to overwinter in the walls and attic. Entry points must be treated and sealed.

Other pests we exterminate

Exterminateur Rive-Nord also deals with: bed bugs, wasps, spiders, fleas, carpenter ants, cockroaches, as well as rodents and animal control.

A fly invasion to be solved?

We locate the source and treat it everywhere on the North Shore of Montreal — Laval, Terrebonne, Blainville, Repentigny, Mascouche and the surrounding areas.
