Wasp extermination and nest destruction on the North Shore
At a glance: A wasp nest near the house is a real risk: the stings can trigger a serious allergic reaction. In Quebec, paper wasps and yellow jackets build aerial nests (in the shape of a large papier-mâché ball that can house several thousand individuals), as umbrellas under eaves, or underground. Destroying a large nest yourself is dangerous: an equipped exterminator intervenes quickly, safely, and often with guarantee.
Don’t take any chances with a wasp nest
Spraying or hitting a nest makes wasps aggressive and causes multiple stings. A professional will take care of it in a few minutes, without danger for you and your family.

Recognizing wasps and their nests
In Quebec, the most disturbing species are paper wasps and yellow jackets. There are three types of nests:
- Aerial nests : large papier-mâché balls suspended from a tree, eaves or ledge — the most populous (up to several thousand individuals at the end of summer).
- Parasol nests : small open structures resembling a mini-beehive, under balconies, door frames or sheds.
- Underground nests : in the ground, old burrows or cavities, difficult to spot.
They are often found near eaves, sheds, hedges, garbage cans or terraces where there is sweet food.
Why wasps are a danger
Unlike bees, a wasp can sting several times. A sting can cause an allergic reaction, or even anaphylactic shock in sensitive people; Multiple bites can be dangerous even for a non-allergic person. Wasps become more aggressive in late summer, when the colony is at its maximum.
When and how to intervene
The best time to neutralize a small nest is early in the season (late May, early June), when it is home to only a queen and a few workers. For a large nest in summer, do not intervene yourself : do not spray it, do not hit it, and do not block the entrance to an underground nest. The procedure is ideally done at dusk, when the wasps are less active — a job to be entrusted to a professional.
Why call an exterminator
An exterminator has the protective equipment and products that allow him to locate and destroy a nest — even hidden or underground — quickly and safely, often with a warranty. According to the CAA-Quebec Wasp Guide, this is the safest solution for a large nest.
Preventing wasps around the house
Inspect eaves, balconies and sheds in the spring for budding nests, seal cracks and openings (our caulking service helps), keep garbage cans tightly closed , and don’t leave sugary food or drinks outside. For other insects, see our insect extermination page.
